Hi, Rob here. Colossians 1:13 tells us that the Father “has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” One of the things we too often forget in our Christian life is how angry Satan is at Jesus and the people who follow him as Lord – that’s you and I. Revelation 12 talks about how after being hurled to earth, defeated and humiliated, “the dragon was enraged at the woman and went off to make war against the rest of her offspring – those who keep God’s commands and hold fast their testimony about Jesus.” This tells me that we need to know two things: we do belong to the kingdom of Jesus. That is our home and we belong there. The other thing is that we were born into a world at war. Satan is angry and he wants to steal our inheritance, kill our hearts and destroy our faith. We must not let him.
Back in Eden, in Genesis 1, human beings were given authority over the earth: “Then God said, ‘let us make human beings in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.‘” We know that Satan, the serpent, deceived Eve and Adam joined in with the deception. Humanity was cast out from the garden, and here’s the important bit, Satan took over our rule. He becomes the ‘prince of this world’, the one who can offer Jesus ‘all the kingdoms of this world’ during his temptation in the desert. By defeating Satan, Jesus restores rule to redeemed humanity.
“I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. However do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” – Luke 10:18-20
‘The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” – John 10:10
“Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” – John 12:31-32.
“…the prince of this world now stands condemned.” – John 16:11
Then after Satan is finally destroyed, we are told in Revelation 22:3-5,
“No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever.”
Satan is angry because he has lost his right to rule and his power to rule. That power now belongs to Jesus and he has passed it on to us who call him Lord. We have authority over Satan and we must learn how to use that authority because he is till seeking to steal, kill and destroy. He’s out to steal our joy, our ability to love, our desire to worship God, our prayer life, our intimacy with God and others and on it goes. Let us take refuge in the blood of Christ, the power of the resurrection and the truth that Christ is King right now because of his ascension to the right hand of God. I suggest reading John Eldredge’s book, ‘Waking the Dead’, and downloading his Advanced Boot Camp talks from their website here.
We have been rescued from the kingdom of darkness and brought into the kingdom of Jesus. We have authority in his name as rulers in that kingdom. We are dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus and it is time for us to take back the ground that the enemy has stolen. Fight well my friends; fight for your heart and the hearts of others; remain in Christ and he will remain in you. Submit to God, resist the devil and watch him flee.
I love this scene when Gandalf frees Théoden, King of Rohan, from evils grasp. Watch him become himself again. Through Christ, we can all be truly ourselves again!
