Wow, is it just me or does the world seem to have gone mad! Riots in London, panic on the sharemarkets, a breakdown of co-operation in the U.S. Of course, here in New Zealand the big issue is how much a rugby jersey costs!!
The fact is it is a great upheaval. Many have lost their retirement savings, others have lost their businesses and a significant amount have lost something even more significant: hope. People without hope either lash out (riot) or give up (suicide or become numb to life).
Here’s the thing, despite Barack Obama’s rhetoric in his presidential campaign of 2008, politicians can’t give hope that lasts. Unless our hope is in Jesus, our hope is a false hope. We can’t depend on governments, on investment portfolios, on economic recovery, on the All Blacks winning the World Cup or on random acts of violence. Our hope is in the one true King, the one who conquered death, the one who pours out his Spirit on us, the one who died for our sins and pain and brokenness, the one who will return and make all things well – Jesus.
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)
