I’ve been on holiday for the last week or so (hence no post last week) and had a great time. The highlight, though, was the drive home. Not because we were suffering from extended family overdose (it sometimes happens but not this time) or because the children were angels in the back seat (they weren’t!), but because I was dumbstruck by God’s beauty.
Winter has had its way here over the last few days. It can cause a lot of disruption to our plans. We put off travelling by a day because of the snowstorms forecast and, being a guy, I found that frustrating! The reward was great however. Blue sky and fields and hills of wonderful white snow. The brightness of the colours was surreal and I drove in wide-eyed wonder at the beauty I was witnessing.
Beauty is one of God’s great gifts to us. One of the signs of an open heart is the appreciation of beauty. The opposite applies. If you are unable to appreciate beauty then your heart may be hardened. Beauty takes many forms. The beauty of creation of course is one. Even then there’s the majestic beauty of mountains or a grand waterfall, and the intricate, delicate beauty of a wildflower or a spider web covered in morning dew. Then there’s the beauty of music, art, Eve (in my case as an Adam), craftsmanship and so on. Beauty is what stops us in our tracks and causes our hearts to come alive to the glory of God. Yesterday I drove with a smile on my face, with eyes wide open and with an uplifted heart.
What about you? Can you recall a time when beauty has just floored you, stopped you in your tracks and caused your heart to soar? Share your story with us. If not, I encourage you to ask for God to open the eyes of your heart and see the abundance of God’s beauty that still radiates through this world.
